Adding Some Fun…

And then there was the Sheltie. The joke in the house is that he is perfect and does no wrong. However, he is quite the sassy little guy!

Fun came to me through a whirlwind of events. I was interested in getting a Sheltie. I talked to a friend, talked to her breeder, and then talked to another breeder. Fun’s breeder had puppies available, and they were 5 weeks old. I went and visited him at a dog show and fell in love. The breeder didn’t know which puppies she was going to keep for her program, so I had to wait. She called me on a Wednesday and asked if I could pick him up that Saturday. Of course I said yes.

I knew he was special from the moment our eyes met. He was smart, mature, confident, and solid. He chose his name. We were driving home and I asked him what his name was. I went through 3 or 4 names, and each time I came to “Fun” he would make little excited noises. I would do it again, and he would sit stoically until the name Fun was presented. We started our foundation training immediately, and he took to it like no dog that I have ever trained.

Fun was ready to compete well before any of my other dogs. He was so honest and in tune. We patiently waited for his growth plates to close, and then for him to be the minimum age to compete. He had his first Steeplechase and Grand Prix Qs and Byes before he was 2 years old. He’s a rockstar and I know that every time that I step to the line with him I will get 100%.

I have only seen Fun sad one time. That was when he had to have foreign body surgery for eating an itty bitty piece of tug toy. He had sad eyes, and it broke my heart.

Fun is very bossy with Man Human. He likes to try to push him around. As biddable as he is with me, he is just as difficult for Man Human… However, Man Human is extremely consistent and clear in his criteria. I think Fun is jealous of our relationship. After all, I was HIS FIRST!

Fun loves to swim. He looks so funny when he is all wet. He is a little fluff ball that looks 35lbs but only weighs 20. One time, I asked to weigh him at the vet. The tech was sitting behind the desk where she couldn’t see the scale. His weight read on the reader, and she told me, “he has to be all the way on the scale.” I smiled and said he was. She looked over the desk and exclaimed, “Oh my gosh! He’s only 20 lbs!”

When I need a demo dog for classes, Fun is my first choice. He loves to show off his skills, and he isn’t bothered by the other dogs lunging and barking at him. Cookies? Sure! I’ll do that!

I sure do love my little bi black Sheltie…
